The New York Mets open the 2026 baseball season against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, March 26, at 1:15 p.m., and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is reminding fans that public transit is the fastest and most environmentally friendly way to get to Citi Field.

"Mr. and Mrs. Met would agree, the LIRR provides fast, safe and affordable service to every single game at Citi Field" said Long Island Rail Road President Rob Free. "So avoid the traffic and let us make sure you're in your seats for the first pitch."

"For us, the fan experience begins long before first pitch, it starts with the trip to Citi Field," said New York Mets Senior Vice President, Security, Guest Experience, & Ballpark Operations Keechant Sewell. "And as always, the train remains one of the most practical, cost-effective ways to get fans to Citi Field and be part of the energy that makes Mets games so memorable."

There are fewer parking spots available at Citi Field this season due to ongoing construction, so the MTA and the Mets are expanding transportation options and providing additional tools for a more affordable gameday experience.

Through the new "Take the Train to the Game" promotion, attendees of Mets home games can receive $5 off of certain Long Island Rail Road tickets, good for use on the day of the game. The discount can be used for day pass or CityTickets to Mets-Willets Point that are purchased in the TrainTime app.

For a rider traveling from Manhattan to a Mets game during the week, a City Ticket Day Pass normally would cost $14.50. With the $5 discount, that price goes down to $9.50. On weekends, the discount is even bigger. A City Ticket Day Pass normally costs $10.50, but with the Mets promo code, the fare goes down to $5.50.

Fans coming from Long Island receive discounts as well. Mets fans from Mineola going to a weekday game would normally pay $24.25 for a Day Pass, but instead can get it for $19.25, on weekends, a normal $20.00 Day Pass would be just $15.00 for Mets fans using the promo code. From Hicksville, Mets fans can get a Day Pass that would normally cost $27.50 on weekdays or $22.50 on weekends for just $22.50 on weekdays or $17.50 on weekends.

When purchasing a ticket for a Mets home game, add the "Take the Train to the Game" promotion at checkout. On the day of the game, you will receive an email with a link to the TrainTime app. Follow that link and purchase a day pass or CityTicket to Mets-Willets Point as usual; the discount code will be automatically applied in your cart.

Beyond opening day, the MTA is marketing similar promotional opportunities to venues, teams, leagues, events, brands and businesses who want to reward or incentivize their customers with seamless discounted or free railroad travel through the TrainTime app.

"This promotion is an example of the MTA working with private entities to earn revenue while improving the customer experience," said MTA Director of Commercial Ventures Mary John. "Public transit is already the best way to get to Mets games, and this benefit makes it easier than ever for our customers."

Long Island Rail Road

The LIRR provides direct service to the Mets-Willets Point station all season long via the Port Washington Branch, just a 19-minute ride from Penn Station. Fans traveling from Long Island on other branches can reach Citi Field by changing at Woodside, just a five-minute ride from the stadium.

Metro-North Railroad

Grand Central Madison makes it easier than ever for Mets fans in Metro-North territory to get to the game.

Customers can take a one-seat ride into Grand Central and finish their trip either on the LIRR or the train. Either option can get a customer to the stadium in 30 minutes from Grand Central.

New York City Subway and Buses

The Mets-Willets Point subway station is right in front of Citi Field on Roosevelt Av near 126 St. Fans can always take either the local or the express train to reach Mets-Willets Point.

The Q48 bus stops at 126 St and Roosevelt Av, right in front of Citi Field. Customers can use the real-time bus ridership tracking feature on the MYmta app before boarding.

Access-A-Ride

Access-A-Ride paratransit has a designated stop at Citi Field located at 41 Seaver Way (126 St and 37 Av), south of the Bullpen Gate in the Passenger Loading Zone (second cut out) directly in front of the AMWAY awning. Customers have ample shelter and a clear sight line of 126 St from Bullpen Gate.

To book a trip, customers can use MyAAR, the MYmta app, or call (877)-337-2017.
