Press Release
Des Moines, Iowa- Tuesday, March 4, 2025 - The Des Moines Metro has enjoyed warmer weather in recent days as spring nears, but winter isn't over yet.
High winds and blizzard conditions are forecasted to roll into central Iowa beginning around midnight tonight, with travel impacts predicted for the Wednesday morning commute.
"Things may get a bit dicey at rush hour tomorrow morning," said Deputy Public Works Director Adam Smith. "If you're able to delay travel or stay home, it's best to avoid driving in these types of conditions."
Heavy winds and blowing snow will cause reduced visibility, with the development of slick spots also causing travel concerns on roadways.
"With the rainfall anticipated for most of Tuesday, we won't be able to effectively pretreat the roads," Smith said. "But we are supplying trucks with plenty of salt and our plows are ready to address whatever comes our way."
Gusts of up to 60 miles per hour are forecasted, with potential to caused downed trees and power lines. Be prepared to shelter in the lowest or most interior area of your home and be sure to have emergency supplies in your home and vehicle.
Des Moines visitors and residents can track plowing progress and stay updated with snow ordinances at DMSnow.org or by following Public Works on Facebook and X (Twitter).
