LaHood Supports FY27 National Defense Authorization Act

Washington, D.C. - Yesterday, Congressman Darin LaHood (IL-16) voted in favor of the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which will rebuild America's defense industrial base, support our servicemembers and their families, and strengthen national security.

"The FY2027 NDAA strengthens our national security, provides the men and women who serve our country with the resources they require, and improves our ability to counter the malign actions of bad actors around the world," said Rep. LaHood. "With ever-evolving threats and foreign adversaries constantly working to undermine and harm the United States, this bill ensures that our military and intelligence community have the tools they need to handle any threat. I was proud to support the inclusion of the SAVE America Act to bolster our election integrity, which goes hand in hand with strengthening our national security. I will always vote for legislation that keeps Americans safe and supports the brave men and women who protect our freedoms and our nation."

Background:
The bill authorizes approximately 1.15 trillion in national defense spending. The spending includes allocations for rebuilding America's defense industrial base, restocking our munitions stockpiles, modernizing our shipbuilding aircraft, and building up our anti-drone defense capabilities. The bill also includes provisions to secure U.S. supply chains from China export controls, expand small business participation in defense manufacturing, and improve the quality of life for our servicemembers with a pay raise of 5-7%. The NDAA also renames the Department of Defense to the Department of War, cuts nearly 30 million in wasteful spending, and requires a full financial audit within 24 months. The House-passed NDAA includes the SAVE America Act, advancing election integrity alongside other national security priorities. Congressman LaHood has supported the SAVE America Act three times previously in the House.

• Prohibiting the Procurement of Semiconductors manufactured on silicon carbide wafers in the People's Republic of China
  • The U.S. has designated silicon carbide (SiC) as a critical material. China dominates the global SiC industry.
  • Rep. LaHood introduced an amendment that supports building out a robust domestic supply chain of SiC to combat the CCP's state-subsidized market strategy to control the entire SiC semiconductor supply chain.
  • The amendment:
    • Directs the Secretary of Defense to revise the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement to prohibit the procurement of non-commercial silicon carbide-based semiconductors manufactured in China;
    • Requires the Pentagon to report back to Congress on American companies that manufacture said chips and the pressure they're facing from Chinese competition;
    • Pushes for U.S allies to keep Chinese manufactured chips and semiconductors out of their own defense supply chains, and further direct a broader strategy to stop China from dominating this part of the tech industry.
