San Francisco County ― Caltrans has planned a full weekend closure of the Eastbound Interstate 80 (EB I-80) freeway between 17th & 4th streets starting Friday, April 17, 11:00 p.m. to Monday, April 20, 6:00 a.m. Throughout the weekend, motorists will not be able to drive along this stretch of freeway (approximately 1.6 miles) and are urged to use public transportation when possible. The southbound and northbound U.S. 101 Bayshore Freeway connector ramps will be closed. Throughout the weekend closure, motorists' last EB I-80 Bayshore Freeway exit will be Vermont St. Motorists who miss Vermont, will be directed to take 9th St. off ramp and redirected through Bryant St., to re-enter the freeway at the 5th St. on ramp.
April 17-20, Weekend Closure Highlights:
Avoid the Area Throughout the Weekend
Motorists are strongly urged to stay away from this section of I-80 for the entire weekend. Significant congestion and travel delays are expected across SoMa, Mission Bay, and surrounding corridors. Consider using public transportation.
If driving is necessary, expect heavy delays and allow extra travel time.
Detours and Travel Alternatives
Detour maps and detour videos are available at sfhighwayprojects.com to help guide motorists safely proceed into San Francisco, or to reconnect to the freeway to enter the EB I-80 San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Clearly marked detour routes will guide drivers around the closure. Motorists may be directed onto local streets or alternate freeway connectors to rejoin I-80 eastbound.
These resources provide detailed visuals of the recommended detour routes.
This extended closure allows crews safe access to the freeway to perform essential structural and bridge deck rehabilitation that will enhance safety and extend its life. This work is part of an ongoing two-year project to rehabilitate the Central/Bayshore freeway viaducts which began in January.
Travelers Should Expect
Why This Work Is Necessary The Central and Bayshore freeway viaducts are 71 years old and carry thousands of vehicles daily near the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge corridor. With constant exposure to heavy traffic loads, weather, and seismic demands, the structures require timely rehabilitation to prevent further deterioration. Performing this work now allows Caltrans to address critical maintenance needs, preserve the existing infrastructure, and ensure continued safety for motorists, commuters, pedestrians, and cyclists traveling through and beneath the structures.
Driver and Community Benefits
Once complete, the project will:
