Full Closure for Rockfall Net Delivery is Scheduled for June 28
HONOLULU - Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is notifying the public that installation of the first delivery of rockfall protection netting is complete. Crews will be removing barriers and shortening the length of the contraflowed single lane on Kamehameha Highway at Waimea Bay to 300 feet on Friday, May 29.
The second and final delivery of rockfall netting is scheduled for Sunday, June 28 to avoid Father's Day. There will be a full closure of Kamehameha Highway from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the helicopter delivery. The full closure will be dependent on weather conditions and emergency vehicles will be allowed coordinated access through the work zone.
Following the delivery of the netting, crews will begin securing the netting to the pre-drilled anchors in the slope. Once the netting is secured, all barriers will be removed and Kamehameha Highway at Waimea Bay will be restored to two lanes. A concurrent installation of 500 feet of impact fencing on the Hale'iwa side of the work zone is underway and anticipated for completion at the same time as the barrier removal. Slope stabilization work and restoration of the second lane is on track for completion by the end of July.
HDOT appreciates the patience and understanding of the Pῡpῡkea, Sunset Beach and Kahuku communities as we continue work to stabilize the slope above Kamehameha Highway between mile posts 5.4 and 6.2.
