The recent discovery of marine pest Mediterranean fanworm (Sabella spallanzanii) on boat hulls has prompted Auckland Council to remind boaties to check and clean their hulls before setting out this summer.
Fanworm is one of nine pest species listed in the Auckland Regional Pest Management Plan and one of the most damaging marine pests in New Zealand waters.
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown encourages boat owners to do the right thing and check their hulls as part of summer boating preparation.
"One of my top five priorities as Mayor is to make the most of our fantastic environment and harbours, and safeguarding our marine environment is vital to achieving this. It is good to see reminders going out to boaties - now it's up to us to make sure we play our part to help prevent the spread of nasty marine pests like the Mediterranean fanworm and caulerpa seaweed, and protect our treasured marine environments for everyone," says Mayor Brown.
Auckland Council compliance manager Adrian Wilson confirms that the council's Biosecurity Compliance Team has intensified efforts to protect the marine environment by working closely with marinas and boat owners across the region.
"We recently discovered boats carrying a range of marine pests, including the Mediterranean fanworm - all boat owners play a vital role in safeguarding our marine environment and stopping the spread of this aggressive species."
"Being proactive is really important, as any boat found to harbour the fanworm can't be moved or cleaned without council authorisation," says Mr Wilson.
Auckland Council Senior Marine Biosecurity Advisor Samantha Happy says keeping hulls clean is vital to protect Auckland's waters and prevent marine pests spreading.
"Like everyone else, boaties deserve a good holiday break and to ensure that happens, checking and maintaining a clean hull and gear will leave a clean conscience and help boaties to set a clear course for summer," says Ms Happy.
Avoid being turned away from a marina, failing a spot check, or introducing marine pests to your favourite bay or harbour - make sure your hull has no more than a light slime layer before you move.
