Rep. María Elvira Salazar Honors South Florida First Responders, Reaffirms Commitment to Public Safety

MIAMI, FL - Today, U.S. Representative María Elvira Salazar hosted a First Responders Recognition Ceremony honoring the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering service of South Florida's law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, and emergency personnel.

The ceremony recognized the critical role first responders play in protecting local communities and highlighted the ongoing need to support those who serve on the frontlines every day.

The event also underscored the Congresswoman's continued commitment to ensuring first responders have the resources, equipment, and federal support necessary to carry out their mission safely and effectively, while reinforcing ongoing efforts in Congress to strengthen public safety across South Florida.

"Today, we recognize the extraordinary men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting our communities," said Rep. Salazar. "Our first responders are the ones who show up in moments of crisis without hesitation, putting service above self to keep South Florida families safe. Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment deserve more than our gratitude. They deserve real support, strong resources, and leaders who will always have their backs. That is exactly what I will continue fighting for in Congress."

Rep. Salazar has led and supported a range of legislative efforts focused on strengthening public safety, supporting first responders, and ensuring law enforcement agencies have the tools and resources needed to protect their communities:

Protecting Firefighters and Emergency Personnel:

Rep. Salazar championed the Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act, now enacted through the FY26 National Defense Authorization Act, expanding federal support for families of first responders disabled or killed by service-related cancers. She also continues advocating for the PFAS Alternatives Act to help develop safer, toxic-chemical-free protective gear for firefighters.

Strengthening Local Law Enforcement:

She supported the Invest to Protect Act, which provides grant funding to smaller local and tribal law enforcement agencies, and backed the Lifesaving Gear for Police Act to improve access to critical search-and-rescue and emergency response equipment.

Honoring the Fallen:

Rep. Salazar supported legislation and resolutions honoring officers killed in the line of duty, including H.Res. 1252 and H.R. 1226, as well as measures recognizing National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

Supporting Veterans in Crisis:

She serves as a co-lead of the SERVICE Act, legislation creating "Veterans Response Teams" within local law enforcement agencies to improve emergency response for veterans facing mental health crises.

Combating Human Trafficking and Exploitation:

Rep. Salazar advanced efforts to strengthen anti-trafficking enforcement through the Empowering Law Enforcement to Fight Sex Trafficking Demand Act and the Human Trafficking Awareness Training Act, equipping agencies with additional tools and training to combat exploitation and protect vulnerable communities.

Supporting Homeownership for Public Servants:

Rep. Salazar remains a strong supporter of the HELPER Act, legislation designed to expand mortgage assistance opportunities for police officers, firefighters, first responders, and teachers.

Delivering Resources for South Florida Public Safety

In addition to her legislative efforts, Rep. Salazar has secured and advocated for millions in federal funding to strengthen public safety infrastructure and modernize emergency response capabilities across South Florida.

Rep. Salazar represents Florida's 27th Congressional District and continues working to strengthen public safety, support first responders, and deliver the federal resources needed to help South Florida communities remain safe and secure.
