Tiffin University has recently completed an economic impact study, demonstrating the significant benefits its students provide to the local community of Tiffin. At Tiffin University, we understand that our impact reaches far beyond the classroom. As a vital part of the Tiffin and Seneca County community, we are proud to contribute to the local economy, create jobs and foster growth throughout the region.
The university paid $23.28 million in salaries and benefits to its employees, supporting local families and providing income that circulates throughout the region. Additionally, TU spent $6.29 million with vendors based in Seneca County, reinforcing our commitment to supporting local businesses.
According to the study, undergraduate students at TU spend $4.165 million annually at local establishments. It was also found that on average, an undergraduate student spends approximately $140 a month on groceries, $84 on dining out and $330 on rent and utilities if living off-campus. Graduate students spend even more, with an average monthly spending of $712 on groceries, $125 on dining out and $375 on rent/utilities for those living off campus.
Approximately 50% of TU students host family and friends in Tiffin, welcoming an average of two to three visitors 11 times per year, with each stay typically lasting two days. A quarter of these visitors stay at local hotels and dine at local establishments, helping to generate an estimated $2.09 million annually for the region.
Beyond the economic contributions, TU students also give back to the community through service. Each year, they collectively volunteer 28,500 hours and 100% of first-year students engage in service-learning projects, further solidifying TU's commitment to community engagement.
"This study demonstrates how Tiffin University strengthens and enriches Tiffin and Seneca County, contributing millions of dollars annually to the local economy," said Mitch Blonde, Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Public Affairs/Chief Advancement Officer at Tiffin University. "Our impact also extends beyond economics - through athletic events, music programs like Christmas at the Ritz, initiatives like LIFE@TU, exhibitions at the Diane Kidd Art Gallery and more, our goal is to bring the community together. Our students' volunteerism and service-learning projects, along with our support for local non-profits and events, reflect our commitment to fostering a thriving region."
"Tiffin University is proud to be a vital part of the Tiffin and Seneca County community," said Tiffin University President Dr. Lillian Schumacher. "Our economic impact study highlights the meaningful ways we contribute to the region - not only by educating future leaders but also by creating jobs, supporting local businesses and fostering growth. At TU, we believe that our impact should extend beyond campus, supporting the community we call home."
