Built to Last: Building Safety Month 2026

Published on May 01, 2026

The buildings we depend on every day, the homes that shelter our families, the schools our children attend, and the offices and shops that anchor our neighborhoods are the result of decades of refined codes, careful inspections, and skilled craftsmanship. This May, the City of Tucson's Planning and Development Services Department (PDSD) is proud to join the International Code Council (ICC) in celebrating the 46th Annual Building Safety Month, a global campaign that honors the people, practices, and standards that keep our built environment safe.
This year's theme, "Built to Last," focuses on how modern building codes and the professionals who enforce them help structures stand up to time, weather, and everyday wear and tear. The campaign is organized into four weekly focuses:
  • Safe Homes, Strong Communities (May 1-10) highlights small steps homeowners can take to make their houses safer
  • Voices of the Built Environment (May 11-17) introduces the inspectors, plan reviewers, and code officials working behind the scenes
  • Prepared to Protect (May 18-24) explores disaster resilience
  • Communities Without Limits (May 25-31) spotlights accessible design
PDSD invites Tucson residents to follow along throughout May as we share tips, resources, and stories that bring "Built to Last" to life right here at home.
The International Code Council provides codes, standards, and solutions to promote safe, affordable, and sustainable buildings and communities. For more information about Building Safety Month, visit the ICC's website.
