The joint defence committees of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved yesterday, September 8th, the acquisition of a Hisar-class light corvette manufactured in Turkey.
The ship's acquisition procedure was initiated at the end of 2024 and was approved by the Homeland Defence Supreme Council in March 2025.
Minister of National Defence, Ionuț Moșteanu, emphasized the importance of this decision:
"I thank the deputies and senators in these committees who put our request, the Romanian Armed Forces' request, on the meeting agenda to get approval for the purchase of a light corvette. It is a Government-to-Government acquisition, a corvette from the Turkish Armed Forces' excess equipment, with modern, NATO-interoperable equipment, a corvette that the Naval Forces tremendously need."
The Parliament's decision is part of the Romanian Naval Forces' modernization program, which includes, in the long term, the manufacturing of four European corvettes, three frigates, submarines, drones and mine-hunters.
"The Black Sea must remain a sea of peace and this will only happen by showing that we are well equipped and continue conducting the joint missions we have with NATO allies. We are already conducting a very successful mission in the Black Sea alongside our Turkish and Bulgarian allies - the MCM Black Sea mine clearance mission - which ensures navigation safety on a daily basis," the minister added.
The Ministry of National Defence reiterates its commitment to strengthen Romania's security and to actively contribute to NATO's collective defence in the Black Sea region.
