White paper series addresses responsible use of AI in teaching and learning

The Teaching and Learning Committee, a subcommittee of the AI Coordinating Council, has developed a series of white papers to guide faculty and the institution in the responsible use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning. The papers synthesize current research and offer recommendations for pedagogy, policy and institutional practice.

Two papers are currently available in the AI Toolkit for Faculty:

AI Detection Tools in Higher Education: "Evidence, Risks, and Recommendations for Institutional Practice" reviews the research on AI detection tools that claim to identify AI-generated student writing. Based on current evidence, the committee concludes that these tools do not provide sufficient value to justify institutional adoption or use as evidence in academic misconduct determinations.

Tutoring with Humans and Machines: "Recommendations for Institutional Practice" examines the role of generative AI in tutoring and academic support. The paper concludes that while AI systems may supplement learning in some circumstances, institutions should preserve and strengthen peer tutoring programs and integrate AI only within human-guided, pedagogically grounded frameworks.

The next white paper in the series will focus on the use of AI when responding to student work.

The white papers are available in the AI Toolkit for Faculty.
