Kaptur Announces Start of Hazardous Substances Cleanup at Former Omni Polymers Facility in Central ToledoPress ReleaseJobs and the EconomyHealth Care

Washington, DC - Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) announced that the US Environmental Protection Agency has begun removing hazardous substances from the former Omni Polymers facility in Central Toledo. The long-awaited cleanup will address thousands of containers left behind after the facility was abandoned, many containing toxic materials that posed risks to residents and the surrounding environment.
"The start of this long-overdue cleanup at the Omni Polymers site represents a critical victory for the health and safety of Toledo residents. For too long, families in our city have been forced to live with the consequences of environmental neglect and industrial irresponsibility," said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09). "Our neighborhoods are not dumping grounds. Our people deserve clean air, clean water, and safe streets. This is a start."
Work will include testing and identifying the contents of more than 2,300 containers, safe consolidation and packaging, and transporting hazardous materials for disposal at approved off-site facilities. The cleanup is expected to be completed by spring 2026, with continuous air monitoring conducted to ensure the safety of nearby neighborhoods.
The property was closed in 2024 after city inspectors discovered serious hazards, including improperly stored chemicals, a non-functional fire suppression system, and structural concerns with the building. A court-ordered injunction permanently barred the facility's operation until conditions were addressed.
