Fantasy Action Series ‘Agent from Above’ Puts Contemporary Spin on Temple Culture and Traditional Folklore in New Trailer

Premiering globally on Netflix on April 2, Agent from Above has unveiled its main trailer and key art, revealing a thrilling world where Taiwan's temple culture and spiritual traditions ignite a modern fantasy battle across the human and spirit realms.

The latest trailer showcases the fantasy action series' rich blend of Taiwanese temple culture and the worship of the Third Crown Prince, reimagining these deeply rooted folk traditions through a contemporary lens. Director Kuan Wei-chieh shared that the team conducted extensive field research, visiting numerous temples and speaking with spirit mediums to better understand the practices and beliefs behind the story.

" Agent from Above isn't a completely fictional fantasy," he explained. "It's rooted in real Taoist beliefs and temple culture in Taiwan, which audiences here know intimately. Because of that, we couldn't simply replicate what already exists; we had to reinterpret and recreate it."

Using the Third Crown Prince (Wang Po-chieh) as an example, Kuan noted that deeper research into the deity's legends revealed a bold and unconventional personality. "He's youthful, but that doesn't mean inexperienced," he said. "If the Third Crown Prince existed in today's world, He might be highly attuned to trends - even a little rebellious or punk. That's the version audiences see in the trailer."

Director Lai Chun-yu added that he and lead cast members Kai Ko and Wang Po-chieh also visited temples dedicated to the Third Crown Prince in Taipei, closely observing rituals and the interaction between mediums and deities. Those experiences helped shape their vision of Han Chieh (Kai Ko) and the Third Crown Prince within a modern context - how they might live, speak and fight today.

The trailer opens with Yeh Tzu (Buffy Chen) asking Han Chieh why he chose to become the Third Crown Prince's spirit medium. We learn that Han Chieh was spared from hell by the deity himself, given a second chance to serve as his medium and repay his sins in the human world. As the Third Crown Prince's spirit medium, Han Chieh battles vengeful spirits while navigating a colorful cast of supernatural troublemakers - including Lin Da-he's lecherous ghost Wang Hsiao-ming and two grandmother spirits played by veteran actresses Lu Yi-ching and Wang Chuan. Their sharp-tongued exchanges add humor that balances the series' darker fantasy and otherworldly elements.

But darker forces are stirring. Wu Tian-chi (Hsueh Shih-ling) sets in motion a plan to resurrect the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven - a return that requires a human medium to break the demon's seal and the role falls to cult leader Chen Chi-sha (Chen Yi-wen). As the demon's power begins to manifest, Han Chieh and Chen Chi-sha collide in a spectacular showdown, with blades, flames and surging supernatural energy erupting as divine, human and demonic forces clash for the fate of the human world.

Despite their intense on-screen rivalry, Chen shared that the many fight sequences helped build strong camaraderie between the two actors: "Kai Ko and I became friends through our fight scenes. Chen Chi-sha and Han Chieh have many battles together, so while rehearsing the choreography, we gradually grew more familiar. After filming wrapped, we were even called back to reshoot a fight scene and spent three more days on set covered in battle wounds - which only made us closer."

The newly released key art is steeped in dark violet hues, with a crimson full moon and falling stone fragments casting an ominous glow. The Third Crown Prince stands turned to the side, his leather jacket and bold braided hair channeling a rebellious, modern edge. Opposite him, Kai Ko's Han Chieh grips the radiant Qiankun Hoop, his sharp gaze fixed forward with calm, unyielding resolve. At the center of the key art, Yeh Tzu and Johnny Yang's detective Chang Min stand as Han Chieh's allies against the darkness. Towering above them are the villains guided by the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven - Chen Chi-sha with his blade drawn, and Wu Tian-chi whose sinister smile signals the battle to come.

Agent from Above ignites an epic battle between gods, demons and humans, streaming globally April 2, only on Netflix.
