Talking about sex can be awkward, uncomfortable, sometimes embarrassing. But it doesn't have to be.
That's why BU Student Health Services (SHS) is bringing back its annual live event-the Condom Fairy's Sex in the Dark. For 90 minutes, a panel of sexperts will field completely anonymous questions about sexual health, relationships, sexual identity, and more. To foster a safe space and to encourage questions, the event is held in complete darkness.
This year's edition of Sex in the Dark, being held in the BU LAW Alumni Auditorium on Monday, April 7, at 7 pm, will have tons of raffle prizes, free safer sex supplies, glow-in-the-dark swag, and limited edition Condom Fairy T-shirts. Plus, the first 50 students to attend will get a limited edition Sex in the Dark canvas tote bag.
Event organizer Sarah Vorhees (SPH'13), SHS assistant director of substance use, recovery, and sexual wellbeing, says the event is particularly valuable because the conversation is entirely shaped by students themselves.
"We want Sex in the Dark to be a welcoming space for all BU students, including for students who aren't currently sexually active," Vorhees says. "It's a great opportunity to learn more about sexuality and sexual health and reflect on what's important to you and what you want from a future sexual and/or romantic relationship."
This year's panel of sexperts includes Deb Lipkin, a nurse practitioner and SHS Primary Care assistant director, Goddess Cecilia, a pleasure educator, advocate, and consultant, and Madeline Wigon, a crisis intervention counselor at Sexual Assault Response & Prevention. The panel will be moderated by student health ambassadors Peyton Nguyen (Sargent'25) and Catalina Sanhueza Schuller (CDS'26).
Fellow student health ambassador Zoe Solberg (CAS'26) says Sex in the Dark is one of her favorite SHS events because she gets to connect students with on-campus resources and promote the Condom Fairy program, an initiative that delivers free contraceptives to BU students.

According to KFF, a nonprofit focused on healthcare, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis are on the rise and adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 24 are disproportionately affected by them. Yet few know how common STIs are in the United States today and that they are actively on the rise.
At Sex in the Dark, Solberg will be running the Pillow Talk Vision Board, hosting a conversation with attendees about sex and its stigmas. Students can then share their ideas of "good sex" on the board, as well as messages about sex they are confused about. Solberg says the idea is to provide students with an opportunity to share their values and experiences with one another.
"I hope to make students feel comfortable having open conversations about sexual health and let go of any shame relating to sexuality," she says.
Cosponsers of the event include Greek Life Sexual Assault Prevention Committee
Interfraternity Council, LGBTQIA+ Student Resource Center, Medical Students for Choice,
Panhellenic Council, Sexual Assault Response & Prevention Center, Student Government Department of Sexual Assault Prevention, and Students for Reproductive Freedom.
This year's cosponsors also are eligible to receive the first-ever Sex in the Dark MVP (Most Valuable Promoter) Award. Attendees will get the chance to vote for the student groups that influenced them to attend Sex in the Dark, and the winner will be awarded a special plaque.
Local donors and community partners include Global Protection Corp., Good Vibrations, Hubba Hubba, Lorals, and Pleasure Pie.
"It's a fun, light-hearted event with awesome giveaways," Vorhees says, adding that SHS is always looking for ways to make Sex in the Dark better. "It's a great event to bring a partner to, come with a group of friends, or check out solo. There's something for everyone."
