Several English faculty hit publishing highlights in 2025-26

Western Washington University's English Department had several publishing highlights in the 2025-26 academic year.

"Our faculty's scholarly and creative activity this year was exceptional in both volume and reach," wrote Department Chair Lysa Rivera in her message in the department's annual newsletter. "With several faculty carrying book-length projects under review or under contract, the momentum shows no sign of slowing."

Among the year's highlights:

  • Assistant Professor José Roach Orduña published "Night Blindness" in the New England Review, debuting his first work of fiction in one of the country's most respected literary magazines.
  • Professor Steve VanderStaay's "The First Days of College: 12 Decisions That Change Everything," was published by Bloomsbury.
  • "Beyond Ourselves: Contemporary Poets on Muriel Rukeyser," co-edited by Associate Professor Stefania Heim, was published in April 2026 by West Virginia University Press.
  • Assistant Professor Jenny Forsythe's "Inca Garcilaso in Translation: Pierre Richelet's Histoire de la Floride (1670) and the Politics of Paraphrase" received the Richard Beale Davis Prize for best article in Early American Literature.
  • Assistant Professor Melissa Guadrón's "The Whys & Wherefores: An Analytical Framework for Diagnosing Neoliberal Epideictic" won the 2025 Judy Segal Top Paper Award from the Rhetoric of Health and Medicine Symposium.
  • Professor Theresa Warburton published her co-edited anthology, "Visions and Interventions," with AK Press.
  • Associate Professor Kiik Araki-Kawaguchi released his poetry collection, "Disintegration Made Plain and Easy," with Piżama Press and placed eight new poems in print.
  • Professor Kelly Magee placed two new poems, "Throwing Questions" and "Layover," in Does It Have Pockets.
