Democrat Gustavo Ortega, a resident of Bay Harbor Islands since 2018, has qualified to appear on the town's April 14 Municipal Election ballot as a candidate for Town Council.
Ortega, a veteran special education teacher, avid marathon runner, and volunteer baseball coach, prioritizes residents' safety and quality of life, sustainable development in harmony with the community's history and culture, and providing a full menu of opportunities for local children and youth.
He is running against Elchonon Shagalov
While the deadline to register to vote in this election has passed, Bay Harbor Islands residents may still sign up to vote by mail through April 2. Early voting has been scheduled for April 11, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm, at the Morris N. Broad Community Center, 1175 95th Street. A secure ballot box will be available during the same hours for those who wish to drop off Vote By Mail ballots. The Community Center will also serve as the town's unique polling site for those who wish to vote on Election Day, April 14.

About the Democratic candidates:
Gustavo Ortega has been a Bay Harbor Islands resident since 2018. A dedicated special education teacher with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Gustavo holds a Master of Science in Childhood Education with a specialization in Children with Disabilities, and has spent his career supporting children with Autism and other special needs. His work has always centered on patience, compassion, and service to others.
Gustavo and his wife Christina are raising their two children in Bay Harbor Islands. Both kids attend Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor K-8 Center, with one in Kindergarten and the other in 4th grade. As a parent, educator, and neighbor, Gustavo is deeply invested in the future of the community.
Outside the classroom, Gustavo coaches the 10U and Pee Wee divisions with Danny Barry Baseball, where he enjoys mentoring young athletes, teaching teamwork, and helping kids build confidence on and off the field. He is also an avid marathon runner who completed the NYC Marathon alongside his wife as she reached a personal milestone following her breast cancer treatment.
