STATEMENT: Sen. Schiff on Senate Vote to Pass Resolution Ending Iran War

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) released the following statement after the Senate voted to approve the War Powers Resolution to remove U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran.

"From the beginning, the administration pursued this illegal war without making the case to Congress or the American people.

"In the months since, we've seen the region in chaos, shifting goalposts and rationales for the war, skyrocketing gas and grocery costs, and tragically, the lives of 13 servicemembers lost with thousands more put in harm's way.

"Now, the administration has capitulated with a complete giveaway to Iran that leaves our national security far worse than when the war began. The Pentagon is requesting billions more to cover the cost of a war that Americans never asked for and the President never had the authority to pursue. It was clear from the start that President Trump was promising far more than he could deliver, and Americans are bearing the costs of his reckless actions.

"Today's vote represents bipartisan and bicameral support of our efforts to end this war of choice once and for all. And it reaffirms Congress' constitutional role in bringing this conflict to an end and bringing our servicemembers safely back home."

Background: Senators Schiff, Tim Kaine (D-Va.), and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), joined by several of their colleagues, have forced numerous votes in the Senate on the War Powers Resolution, including asserting the 60-day statutory clock, triggered by a notification to Congress, had run out on the president's ongoing use of military force, in addition to being unconstitutional from the start.

In May, the Senate advanced a War Powers Resolution to force an end to President Trump's war with Iran. Recently, Schiff led 37 Senate Democrats in refuting the Trump administration's claim in a May 1 letter to Congress that the hostilities that began on February 28, 2026 in Iran have "terminated" and requested President Trump release the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) opinion supporting this claim.
