For businesses in highly regulated sectors like banking and fintech, this decision provides a clearer, more transparent view of Signicat's compliance status across all its services.
This consolidation also comes as the European digital identity market enters a period of rapid, policy-driven growth. The European Commission has set a target for 80 percent of EU citizens to use a digital wallet by 2030. This initiative is backed by projections from Juniper Research that the global digital identity sector will reach 80 billion dollars in the same timeframe, underscoring the need for robust and verifiable trust mechanisms.
The eight acquisitions that Signicat has made in recent years, including the UK's Sphonic in 2022, have led to its services being assessed by five different certification bodies. This fragmented structure, a common outcome of M&A in the technology industry, created practical challenges, increasing administrative work and making a unified view of compliance unnecessarily complex.
"Following a period of rapid growth and several strategic acquisitions, we found ourselves managing a fragmented and increasingly complex compliance framework, with different CABs across Europe," says Jon Ølnes, VP of Digital Identity and Regulation at Signicat. "We decided to run an RFI among the CABs and TÜV Austria had the best solutions and services to consolidate the situation and for the changes ahead as EUDI Wallets are introduced across Europe."
"Signicat's decision to consolidate its eIDAS conformity assessments under the hat of TÜV Austria as a single CAB reflects the increasing maturity of the European digital identity market," notes Clemens Wanko, Head Accredited Conformity Assessment Body (eIDAS) at TÜV AUSTRIA. "As digital trust services become more interconnected and eIDAS 2.0 accelerates adoption across Europe, organisations require assurance frameworks that are both robust and scalable. We are proud to support Signicat as its strategic conformity assessment partner and to contribute to the development of a trusted, interoperable, and future proof European digital identity ecosystem."
The partnership with TÜV AUSTRIA, which already assesses Signicat's identity proofing service, will also allow for combining eIDAS assessments with other certifications, such as ISO and SOC2. The transition will be managed gradually to ensure services remain continuously compliant.
