PRESS STATEMENT 113

Statement on International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

Today
On 2 November, the United Nations commemorate the 11th day to end impunity for crimes against journalists. Spain reaffirms its firm commitment to protecting media professionals and promoting a free press as an essential pillar of democracy and the rule of law.

Spain recalls that without journalists who are free to work without fear of reprisals, and without access to accurate and reliable information, there can be no transparency and no true democracy. Spain therefore supports international and European mechanisms for the protection of press freedom, the defence of editorial independence and the confidentiality of sources, as well as the accountability of perpetrators of attacks and crimes against journalists. Spain reaffirms its support for those who report from conflict zones or under pressure.
