Mayor Dylan Parker joined students from Maroubra Junction Public School last week to plant a new tree as part of Randwick City Council's Greening Our City program, celebrating the success of an initiative that has added over 2,000 trees across the city.
The program set out to boost Randwick City's tree canopy coverage from 18 per cent toward a long-term goal of 40 per cent canopy coverage by 2040.
Since launching, trees have been planted across neighbourhood streets, coastal reserves and local parks. Once grown, they will help to cool suburbs, improve air quality, and create greener public spaces.
A native Bottlebrush tree was chosen for the Maroubra location as it will attract birdlife with the large numbers of bright red bottlebrush flowers in spring and summer.
Newly planted trees are cared for by Council's contractor during their first 12 months, at which point Council takes over responsibility for watering and maintenance through its routine tree care program.
Most trees planted are thriving, with just two per cent - or 40 trees - needing to be replaced.
Following the success of the program, Council has resolved to develop a new planting strategy to continue expanding our urban forest and support a more sustainable, resilient and liveable city.
The Greening Our City program was proudly delivered with support from the NSW Government's Greening Our City grant program.
Randwick City Council has a zero-tolerance policy on tree vandalism, which is an offence. If you have any information regarding incidents of tree vandalism, please contact us on 1300 722 542.
