Hazmatt Art Sculpture Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony to be held January 13, 2026

December 12, 2025

The City of Norman's newest public art installation, made almost entirely of retired dumpsters and reclaimed waste materials, aims to turn trash into a symbol of environmental stewardship. Community members are invited to learn more about the artwork and its inspiration at an upcoming ribbon-cutting event.

Hazmatt, a 20-foot-tall "gentle giant," reclines hillside at the City of Norman Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHWF), holding a wildflower. The sculpture was created by Kenneth Eugene Hall, Jr., a Norman-based creative and founding member of Crucible Art Foundry and Gallery.

"Hazmatt's relaxed, contemplative posture invites residents to think about their connection to the environment, encouraging safer, more mindful waste practices," said Michele Loudenback, Manager of the Division of Environmental Resilience & Sustainability.

The multi-year art project was funded at just over $14,000 and made possible by leftover facility construction dollars from the City's HHWF Capital Project fund. The HHWF came on-line in 2022 and serves as a one-stop shop to responsibly dispose of and recycle hazardous waste. For Normanites, it is a collection point for everything from pesticides to kerosene and paint removers.

"The HHWF has been well received in our community and we are grateful for the support and participation of our residents," Loudenback said. "Hazmatt will now serve as an instant friendly ambassador for those visiting the facility - without needing to say a word. Hazmatt brings both beauty and purpose, standing as a creative example of waste reduction and resourcefulness."

All fabrication and assembly occurred onsite or at the City's Container Maintenance Facility, Loudenback said.

The ribbon-cutting will include words from the creating artist, elected officials and City staff. All are welcome to attend. It will begin at 4 p.m. on January 13, 2026, at 3803 Chautauqua Avenue.

When visiting Hazmatt, individuals should ensure facility driveways are not blocked. They should also remain behind safety fencing.
