63rd session of the Human Rights Council Enhanced Interactive Dialogue on reports of the High Commissioner and Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar

Mr President,

New Zealand welcomes the important work of the Independent Investigative Mechanism and that of the High Commissioner and his office. We reiterate our strong support for ASEAN's central role in addressing the crisis and for the full implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.

We remain gravely concerned by the deteriorating human rights situation in Myanmar. The military regime continues to subject the people of Myanmar to escalating violence and human rights violations. The scale and persistence of these violations have displaced communities and further eroded the prospects for peace and stability. The current trajectory is unsustainable.

The humanitarian consequences are severe. Conflict, economic decline and recurrent disasters have left millions in need of assistance. Food insecurity remains widespread, while the situation of the Rohingya, both in Myanmar and in neighbouring countries, remains deeply concerning.

New Zealand has contributed more than NZ$128 million in assistance since the 2021 coup. We remain committed to supporting humanitarian efforts that reach those most in need, in accordance with humanitarian principles.

Genuine dialogue involving all relevant stakeholders is vital for a peaceful and durable resolution to this crisis. The people of Myanmar deserve a future grounded in accountable and transparent governance, respect for human rights, and leadership that reflects the will of the people.

Mr President, what further steps can the international community take to foster genuine and inclusive dialogue towards a resolution of the crisis in Myanmar?
