With 2025 now underway, it's time for our annual review of last year's most popular content on the ARIN Blog - along with a huge thank you to all the authors who contributed their time and expertise to provide valuable information for our community.
2024 was full of organizational and community news, updates, and discussions, and the blog covered many stories and topics beyond those that made it into this top eight list. Aside from traveling to Barbados and Toronto for our Public Policy and Members Meetings, we retired SWIP email templates for reporting reallocations and reassignments, participated in many Caribbean development activities, made our second contribution of US$1 million to the IETF Endowment, hosted a holiday toy drive to benefit families in our local community, made multifactor authentication mandatory for all ARIN Online accounts, and more.
That said, our most popular blog topics in 2024 were either technically focused or focused on community programs and participation, including: IPv6; Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI); community grants; the ARIN Fellowship Program; and ARIN membership. So, let's get into it! Here's a look at the top eight blog posts or series from last year…
8. NRO RPKI Program Series: Parts 1-4
This guest blog series kicked off in March, with the Number Resource Organization's (NRO's) new RPKI Program Manager, Sofía Silva Berenguer, discussing how the NRO is working toward a robust, coordinated, and secure RPKI service. In May, Sofía returned to share the specific outcomes guiding the program's efforts and the community feedback needed to support them. Come August, she invited network operators to share details of their RPKI adoption journey and what barriers they have faced to help determine if differences in RPKI implementations across the Regional Internet Registries are hindering RPKI adoption. At the end of the year, Sofía provided a review of the program's 2024 activities and findings along with the three priorities for 2025 that they prompted.
7. Navigating the Internet Policy Landscape: A Transformative Journey with ARIN
ARIN 52 Fellow Waqar Ahmad shared the transformative experiences that unfolded during the ARIN Fellowship Program, highlighting his interactions with community members and leaders and the impact on his understanding of Internet governance.
6. ARIN RPKI Updates and Upcoming Enhancements
Brad Gorman, now ARIN's Director of Customer Technical Services, reviewed the many upgrades and adjustments to ARIN's RPKI services that took place in 2023, shared the plans in place for 2024, and explained why customers should switch to the new API.
5. Journeying from Novice to Contributor: My Path into ARIN Policy Development
In another guest post from an ARIN 52 Fellowship Program alum, Mohibul Mahmud discussed his experience in and after the program and the aspirations of participation and impact within the community that it fostered.
With recent changes to the ARIN Fee Schedule impacting customer organizations' membership status and expanding opportunities for participation in ARIN governance, Chief Customer Officer John Sweeting explained the effects of the fee harmonization, the difference between Service and General Members, the importance of participating in ARIN Elections, and how to request General Membership.
3. Congratulations to the 2024 ARIN Community Grant Recipients
In its sixth year in 2024, the ARIN Community Grant Program continued providing funding for projects that improve the Internet and make positive contributions to the Internet community in the ARIN region. Project Manager Amanda Gauldin announced the 2024 grant recipients and shared details about the impactful projects they would be working on.
2. Meet the ARIN Fellows: ARIN 53 and ARIN 54
Twice a year, for each ARIN Public Policy and Members Meeting, we host the ARIN Fellowship Program, and it's always a blog highlight when we introduce the new cohort of Fellows to the community. Project Manager Amanda Gauldin shares where the Fellows are from and some fun facts about them, along with the names of the ARIN Advisory Council Mentors who will help guide them through the experience and an overview of the program's curriculum. In 2024 we had 15 Fellows for ARIN 53 and 14 Fellows for ARIN 54.
1. The Business Case for IPv6 Series: Parts 4, 5, and 6
This popular guest blog series we began in 2023 continued last year with three new installments. First, HexaBuild CSO and Co-Founder Tom Coffeen identified some potential elements of a business case for enterprise IPv6 deployment based on an IPv6-only approach. Next, Lee Howard, Senior Vice President for IPv4.Global by Hilco Streambank, explored the benefits of recovering and monetizing IPv4 addresses and shifting from IPv4 to IPv6 as the basis for network connectivity. Finally, Lee returned to discuss why, for e-commerce and ad-serving sites, the benefit of deploying IPv6 is almost certainly much higher than the cost (hint: it's because time is money in e-commerce).
