Outstanding, coordinated police work led to Tuesday's arrest of a machete-wielding robbery suspect, Fred Johnson, who approached a 26-year-old woman as she walked toward downtown Nashville on Shelby Avenue at South 2nd Street. He demanded her belongings. The victim, who was visiting from out of state, complied.
The robbery was captured on community safety cameras at 9:45 a.m. and police personnel quickly shared Johnson's description. Central Precinct officers flooded the area and located Johnson in the 600 block of South 2nd Street. The woman's stolen belongings, including her purse, were recovered and returned to her.
Johnson, 31, is charged with aggravated robbery. He told detectives that he needed cash for drugs. He is also named in arrest warrants charging him with burglary, vandalism, and theft for the March 24th burglary of Lainey Wilson's Bell Bottoms Up Bar.
At the time of yesterday's robbery, Johnson was free on $3,500 bond for a March 15th arrest for public intoxication, evading arrest, and disorderly conduct. Johnson was also arrested in February for violating his bond conditions related to a domestic assault conviction.
