The City of Yuma's Arts and Culture Division and Yuma Community Theater are teaming up to bring Richard O'Brien's "The Rocky Horror Show" to the Historic Yuma Theatre (254 S. Main Street) October 23 and 24.
For the first time in Yuma, audiences will have the opportunity to experience the cult classic as a fully staged live musical featuring a local cast, iconic songs, and familiar characters.
The story follows sweethearts Brad (played by Lee Emerson) and Janet (played by Julianna Gentry) as they stumble upon the mysterious castle of the eccentric Dr. Frank-N-Furter (played by Aidan Arviso), setting the stage for an unforgettable evening of music, comedy, and interactive fun. The production is directed by Fellow Daniela Ayala.
"Bringing 'The Rocky Horror Show' live to the stage in Yuma is such an exciting opportunity because it gives our audiences a completely new way to experience a story they already know and love," said Melodia Flores, Events Operations Leader. "Many people are familiar with the shadow cast tradition, but the live musical brings a different energy to the experience. I'm excited for audiences to see the characters, music, and story come to life onstage in a way they haven't experienced here before."
The production builds on a history of collaboration between the Yuma Art Center and Yuma Community Theater.
"We have enjoyed partnering with Yuma Community Theater through projects such as 'Sunday in the Park with George' during Art in the Park, as well as by hosting its productions in our theater," said Ana Padilla, Cultural Affairs Manager. "With that strong history of collaboration, 'The Rocky Horror Show' felt like a natural partnership. We know that when we come together around a shared vision, we are stronger and more successful, and this collaboration gives us the opportunity to create something special for our community."
Tickets are $20. Doors open at 7 p.m., followed by a costume contest at 7:45 p.m. and the performance at 8 p.m. Concessions and a bar will be available.
Guests are encouraged to dress up and participate in the Rocky Horror experience. Official prop bags will be available for purchase and will include newspaper, bubbles, playing cards, noisemakers, confetti poppers, a rubber glove, a glow stick, toilet paper, and a party hat.
Outside props will not be permitted. Birdseed, water guns, and bread are also prohibited.
The production is intended for audiences ages 18 and older due to mature themes and content. Valid identification will be required for entry.
