Emergency Lane Closures And Stenmark Drive On-Ramp Shutdown Impact Eastbound I-580 Richmond-San Rafael Bridge

Published: Mar 18, 2026

Contra Costa County - Caltrans has implemented emergency lane closures and a full on-ramp shutdown on eastbound I-580 in Richmond following an overnight incident involving a vehicle striking the Scofield Avenue undercrossing. As a precaution, lanes 2 and 3 on eastbound I-580 from the Toll Plaza to Stenmark Drive are closed while Caltrans bridge engineers conduct a thorough structural assessment. The eastbound I-580 on-ramp at Stenmark Drive is also fully closed. These closures are tentatively scheduled to remain pending the outcome of bridge inspections.

Due to the on-ramp closure, residents located behind Stenmark Drive will need to detour by traveling westbound on I-580 crossing the bridge and looping back toward Richmond.

Closures Details:

  • Eastbound I-580 near Toll Plaza to Stenmark: Lane #2 and Lane #3 CLOSED
  • STENMARK DRIVE On-ramp to EB I-580: CLOSED

Motorists should expect delays and are advised to seek alternate routes or allow extra travel time. At this time, there is no estimated time for full reopening.

We appreciate the public's patience as we work to ensure the integrity of the roadway. The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge remains safe and open for travel despite ongoing lane closures.
