Today, the Detroit Department of Innovation and Technology announced the roll out of eight planned Motor City Tech Bars inside the city, with the first two already open and helping residents experiencing problems with their digital devices.
Set to roll out in three phases over the next year, Detroit residents will be able to bring in broken laptops, phones, or other smart devices to be fixed, free of charge. Appointments will be available, although not required, alongside e-waste recyclable containers at each of the locations.
The tech bars will include at least one in every city council district so one is accessible to all Detroiters. The 8 tech bars will be located inside existing Tech Hubs the city has established to provide greater digital access to residents of Detroit. Two of the tech bar locations at the Redford Branch and Douglas Branch of the Detroit Public Library, are already open.
"Human-I-T is honored to collaborate with the City of Detroit and Detroit Public Libraries to empower Detroiters with equitable access to digital literacy skills training services and free tech support through the Motor City Tech Bar." said Director of the Department of Innovation & Technology, Art Thompson. "Together our efforts will continue to get our local community away from the wrong side of the digital divide."
In addition to the free device diagnostics and repair, Tech Bars will also offer one on one personalized help, and digital literacy courses.

"The Detroit Public Library (DPL) has been at the forefront of bridging the digital divide for customers for generations." Christopher Korenowsky, Chief Operations and Customer Experiences Officer of the Detroit Library said. "Public libraries began offering access to technology in a concentrated way in the early 1990's, and DPL has led the charge since that time. DPL is proud to continue to ensure technology access is open to all and free of charge while working with our partners on this digital equity initiative."
