Seven Baruch College undergraduates have been awarded prestigious Gilman Scholarships, joining a select group of 3,500 students nationwide who will study abroad in fall 2025 or winter 2026-turning a lifelong dream into reality.

The Gilman Program-which provides up to $5,000 to pursue international study-received a record-breaking 17,000 applications during the 2024-2025 academic year, making this year's selection especially competitive.

Meet the award-winning students-who represent all three of Baruch College's schools-and where they will be studying abroad:

  • Joshua Arancibia ('26), finance major, Spain
  • Sherise Chen ('26), actuarial science major, Japan
  • Dalila Garcia ('26), public affairs major, Spain
  • Julie Ren ('26), accountancy major, South Korea
  • Lizzette Rivera ('26), computer information science, Mexico (winter 2026)
  • Phuntsok Yolmo ('27), finance major, Spain

Chen also received a Critical Language Award, which is a $3,000 supplement, to support Gilman Scholars who are studying foreign languages.

About the Gilman Scholarship

Established by the U.S. Congress, the Gilman Scholarship began in 1991 as an initiative of the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is aided in its implementation by the Institute of International Education. The program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

According to the Department of State, Gilman Scholars who study abroad "return to communities across the United States with the global networks and foreign language skills needed to support U.S. economic and national security interests."
