Governor Josh Stein designated February 25 as Wastewater Professionals Appreciation Day in North Carolina, recognizing the essential work of wastewater professionals and highlighting the importance of protecting our most valuable and vital natural resource, water.
In addition, the NC Department of Health and Human Services and the NC Wastewater Monitoring Network (NCWMN) honored the professionals who have helped to make wastewater monitoring possible and successful since 2020. They have provided over 16,000 essential wastewater samples for analysis. With this support, NCWMN has grown and was designated as a National Wastewater Surveillance System Center of Excellence in 2024. Greensboro has participated in this program since its inception.
The City's sole wastewater plant, the T.Z. Osborne Water Reclamation Facility, operates around the clock thanks to a dedicated team of trained, state-certified professionals working behind the scenes to protect public health and the environment. Laboratory staff continuously monitor wastewater, while maintenance staff and operators keep systems running safely 24/7. Treating the City's wastewater, which averages 35 million gallons per day, takes a team effort, and every member plays an important role in protecting public health and supporting our community.
The City's 2025 Sewer Report is available online. During the 2025 calendar year, the City had no compliance violations and saw a 23 percent drop in sanitary sewer overflows from the previous year. The strong performance of the City's treatment system is a direct result of the professionals who operate, maintain, and test its systems.
The Water Resources Department's primary mission is to provide the highest level of water, sewer, and stormwater services, to protect public health, and sustain an enjoyable quality of life.
