Disability Justice, News, Transforming Mental Health Crisis Response

NYLPI joined coalition partners in a letter to Governor Hochul and leadership regarding the critical need for voluntary, community-based approaches to mental health crisis response in New York.

"… Many of us have spent decades creating and/or implementing a wide range of proven assertive and effective voluntary models to support and engage this population. The surest way of preventing risk to individuals with serious mental illness is through expansion of the evidence-based and community-based mental health services we identify below. Further, the Governor should utilize the powers granted under existing law and empanel 31.37 incident review panels and get real answers, and develop real solutions, when system breakdowns result in violence or other tragedies. These solutions will impact and improve the care of thousands of people going forward."
