The City of Greensboro will activate two White Flag warming centers on Monday, January 26, and Tuesday, January 27, in response to anticipated freezing temperatures overnight. The following locations will provide overnight shelter from 7 pm until 7 am:
First Baptist Church, 1000 W. Friendly Ave., will be open to single adults and families and staffed by Interactive Resource Center (IRC) employees. The Greensboro Transit Agency (GTA) will have buses at First Baptist Church tonight and Tuesday night to transport individuals to Glenwood Recreation Center as needed.
Glenwood Recreation Center, 2010 Coliseum Blvd., will be open to women and families and staffed by a combination of IRC employees and the City's Community Safety Department.
Transportation will be provided from First Baptist Church to Glenwood Recreation Center between 7 pm and 8:30 pm.
GTA, with the support of the Greensboro Police Department, will be at both White Flag sites on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings to transport individuals from the White Flag warming centers to the IRC for daytime warming.
The City's Community Safety Department activates White Flag status when the actual or "feels-like" temperature is 32 degrees or less for two or more hours. A White Flag alert can take effect when the forecast or current conditions include a winter weather event with freezing precipitation, extended below-freezing temperatures, and/or wind concerns, which may impact homeless encampments.
