KILLEEN, Texas (May 15, 2025) - The City of Killeen is announcing its designation as a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community by Gov. Greg Abbott's Economic Development & Tourism Office. This is part of the governor's Travel Texas program, meaning Killeen joins an elite group of destinations in the program's inaugural year. This recognition highlights Killeen's commitment to developing tourism as a key economic growth strategy and showcasing the city's unique attractions to visitors from across the nation and around the world.
Governor Greg Abbott congratulated Killeen, recognizing the important role tourism plays in the Texas economy, which supports 1.3 million jobs and generates over $199 billion in annual economic impact.
"Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies," Gov. Abbott said. "I congratulate the City of Killeen and Killeen Convention & Visitors Bureau on earning this designation."
Killeen is one of just 35 cities to earn the designation, and the first in Bell County.
"This designation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire community," Tanida Mullen, Killeen Convention & Visitors Bureau Manager, said. "From our welcoming residents to our thriving local businesses, we're committed to making Killeen a premier destination where visitors feel at home while experiencing everything our vibrant city has to offer."
The Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community designation was achieved after Killeen successfully completed a rigorous, multi-step certification process, demonstrating the city's strategic approach to tourism development and promotion.
Travel Texas Director, Tim Fennell, praised Killeen's achievement, noting, "As a city that blends rich history with versatile attractions, Killeen offers visitors a distinct taste of Texas hospitality. From its deep connection to the historic Cavalry Regiment at Fort Cavazos to its robust arts, shopping and dining options, Killeen welcomes an enriching experience for travelers."
Killeen's unique combination of military heritage, diverse dining experiences, signature events including music festivals and markets, public art installations, and open park space makes the city an attractive destination for travelers of all ages and interests.
The designation recognizes the achievements the city has seen recently. This year Killeen has been invited to join the Texas First Street cohort-- the first step in achieving National Main Street accreditation-- and was also designated a Music Friendly City in April.
