As the media industry continues to evolve, the need for innovative leaders in journalism and mass communication education grows.
North Carolina Central University's (NCCU) Calvin Hall, Ph.D., is advancing that work after being selected for the 2026 Scripps Howard Leadership Academy, a national program for aspiring deans.
Hall, chair and associate professor in the NCCU Department of Mass Communication, is among 14 faculty and administrators from colleges and universities across the country chosen to participate in the competitive academy. It is hosted by the SI Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
Through workshops, discussions, case studies and networking opportunities, participants explore strategies for leading academic programs, navigating university administration and shaping the future of media education. This year's theme, "Preparing the Next Generation of JMC Deans," focuses on lessons from current deans, institutional leadership strategies and approaches for strengthening academic programs. Upon completion, participants will receive a personalized leadership roadmap, a peer accountability partnership and a strategic action plan to support their continued growth as academic leaders.
Now in its third year, the Scripps Howard Leadership Academy is a partnership between the Newhouse School and the Scripps Howard Fund. The program covers travel, accommodations and participation costs for all selected attendees.
