City of Boulder Seeks Public Art Proposals for Bear Creek Greenway Trail Project

The City of Boulder invites artists to apply for a new public art opportunity along the Bear Creek Greenway Trail. A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is now open for artists or artist teams to design and install original artworks at two underpass entrances on the trail.

The selected artist(s) will create a total of four installations across the two underpass sites. While all U.S.-based artists and suitable two-dimensional artistic media will be considered, preference will be given to mosaic artworks and to artists living in Colorado. The project budget is approximately $45,000 per site, or $90,000 if one artist is selected for both sites. Funding comes from the city's 1% for Art Policy, which dedicates one percent of eligible capital project budgets to public art.

The selection panel seeks bright, whimsical and uplifting artworks that activate the underpass entrances and reflect the energy of trail users. Artists are encouraged to explore themes connected to the history, geography and ecology of Bear Creek. To be eligible for consideration by the selection panel, artists must submit applications by Monday, Nov. 17, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Interested artists should apply through the call posted to CaFÉ.

"Public art has the power to transform everyday spaces into places of discovery," said Brendan Picker-Mahoney, Public Art Program Manager. "We're excited to see proposals that celebrate the spirit of the Bear Creek Greenway Trail while creating a welcoming and vibrant experience for all who use it."

The Bear Creek Greenway Trail is a popular multi-use path for walking, running, and biking, connecting neighborhoods and open spaces across Boulder. It also forms part of the city's 24-mile B360 bike route.
