The Marion Police Department will hold its first Civilian Police Academy this fall to help community members gain a better understanding of the department's procedures, guidelines and responsibilities while providing opportunities to interact with the officers and command staff.
The academy provides a unique "hands-on" opportunity to engage in a variety of law enforcement tasks and responsibilities, including patrol operations, investigations, traffic enforcement, emergency response and community policing.
"This program is a fantastic opportunity to see firsthand the daily tasks, responsibilities and dedication of our officers and staff," said Chief of Police Jeremy Sprague. "It is designed to strengthen community partnerships and foster transparent communication."
The class will meet on nine consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6-9 p.m., with the first class scheduled for Sept. 2, 2026.
Participants must be at least 18 years of age, consent to a background check and commit to attending all sessions. The academy will be limited to 20 participants, with preference given to Marion residents.
Online applications are now open at www.cityofmarion.org/employment. Applications will be processed on a rolling basis and will close as soon as all spots are filled.
