Photovoice exhibition to show immigrant experiences in access to health care

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - A photovoice exhibition showcasing the health care experiences of immigrants with limited English proficiency in the United States will be held from noon to 3 p.m. April 15 in the Morrison Gallery of the Madlyn L. Hanes Library at Penn State Harrisburg.

The exhibition, hosted by Sara Imanpour, assistant professor of health administration in the School of Business Administration, is open to the public.

Visitors to the exhibition will see photos with narrative captions and stories from immigrants with limited English proficiency on topics such as barriers to accessing health care, communication challenges, resilience, and opportunities for more equitable care.

Photovoice is a research approach that uses photography and participant-led storytelling to elevate the voices of people who are often underrepresented or not heard in traditional research and public discourse, Imanpour said. Participants capture images that reflect their experiences and share short narratives presented in a public exhibit.

The research exhibit is supported by the Penn State Social Science Research Institute.
