Josephine County Board of Commissioners Weekly Update

Josephine County, OR - During the week of May 26-29, 2026, the Josephine County Board of Commissioners participated in several public meetings, workshops, budget discussions, and community engagement activities focused on County operations, infrastructure, budgeting, legal matters, and public safety.
The week began with a KAJO Radio interview during which Commissioners Ron Smith, Colene Martin, and Gary Richardson discussed current County business and ongoing Board activities with the public.
During May 26th Administration Workshop, the Board approved a progress payment related to the decommissioning and environmental remediation of aging Public Works fuel tanks and pumps. Commissioners also reviewed personnel requisitions and staffing actions involving Juvenile Justice, the Animal Shelter, the District Attorney's Office, and Emergency Management, including continued support for expansion of the County's Firewise outreach efforts.
The Board convened multiple Budget Committee meetings throughout the week to continue review of the proposed Fiscal Year 2026-2027 budget. Department presentations included the Clerk's Office, Assessor's Office, Treasurer, Surveyor, Building Department, Planning Department, Veterans Services, Public Works, Fleet, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal Counsel, and Forestry. Budget discussions included staffing levels, operational needs, technology modernization, reserve considerations, and long-term departmental planning.
At the May 27 Weekly Business Session, the Board welcomed representatives from the Oregon State Marine Board and recognized several individuals with Life Saver Awards for their role in a February 2026 Illinois River rescue operation. Commissioners expressed appreciation for the collaborative rescue efforts involving private citizens, Search and Rescue personnel, and emergency responders. The Board also approved the Consent Calendar and heard commissioner announcements related to wildfire preparedness and community emergency readiness efforts throughout Josephine County.
On May 28, the Board received a Legal Counsel Update regarding ongoing County litigation, land use legal services, and related operational matters. The Board approved a professional services agreement with Cauble, Furr & Beguin, LLP to continue providing legal support for Community Development and Solid Waste matters. The Board also considered litigation-related matters in Executive Session pursuant to ORS 192.660(2)(h) and later approved a settlement agreement related to pending foreclosure litigation during open session.
Additionally, the Board met in an Executive Session during the week pursuant to ORS 192.660(2)(b) to receive confidential legal counsel and personnel-related updates authorized under Oregon Public Meetings Law. Any discussions occurring during Executive Session remain confidential by law.
