The suspect in a 2023 homicide has been booked into jail following his indictment.

On Tuesday, April 30, 2024, a Multnomah County Grand Jury indicted Amel R. Johnson, 31, of Fairview, for the shooting death of Marlan Johnson (the two are not related) in June 2023. At the time of the indictment, Johnson was lodged in the Nye County Jail in Nevada on separate charges.

On Monday, August 4, 2025, Johnson was extradited to Oregon and lodged in the Multnomah County Detention Center on the following charges: Murder in the Second Degree, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Recklessly Endangering Another Person (two counts).

The victim's family has been notified of these developments.

No further information will be released at this time.

The victim who died from this incident has been identified as Marlan Johnson, 24. His family has been notified of his death and provided the attached photograph of him for public distribution.

The Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be by gunshot and the manner of death to be homicide.

Man Killed in Shooting

A man died after a shooting in the Lloyd District Neighborhood.

On Friday, June 23, 2023 at 9:47p.m., North Precinct officers responded to a report of someone shot at Northeast 6th Avenue and Northeast Holladay Street. When officers arrived, they located an injured victim, an adult male. They applied trauma first aid and summoned EMS, but the victim died at the scene.

The suspect or suspects left the scene before police arrived and no immediate arrests were made.

The Portland Police Homicide Unit is responding to the scene to investigate the incident. During the investigation, Northeast Holladay Street is closed between Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Northeast 7th Avenue. Northeast 6th Avenue is closed between Northeast Hassalo Street and Northeast Pacific Street.
