WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on South and Central Asia, issued the following statement after the Supreme Court struck down the Trump Administration's tariffs:
"American consumers rejoice: Trump's Temper Tariffs are coming to an end! We said this sh*t was not legal, and today SCOTUS confirmed it. The president does not have unilateral authority to impose tariffs on whatever he pleases. The Constitution makes clear that the power to impose tariffs lies with Congress.
"These arbitrary tariffs have created chaos for small businesses and caused prices for nearly everything from groceries to clothes to skyrocket, all while doing next to nothing to protect American workers and industries. They have also been weaponized to torpedo relationships with close U.S. partners like India and Brazil at the literal expense of the American taxpayer.
"The Trump Administration must halt the tariffs immediately and provide Americans relief from the affordability crisis of Trump's own making. And the Supreme Court must make clear that American businesses need to be reimbursed for tariffs that were collected illegally. I will do everything in my power to ensure that refunds are disbursed."
