Data use guidelines for AI applications available

Boise State has released updated Data Use Guidelines to help the campus community better understand how university data can be used with generative AI tools. These guidelines build on Policy 8060 and provide practical direction for faculty, staff and students working with university data in emerging technologies.

A key feature of the update is a set of new tables that outline which types of university data can be used with different applications, giving users clearer guidance on appropriate use. Table 2 and Table 3, respectively, identify specific types of restricted and confidential data that can be used in BoiseState.AI and Boise State Google Generative AI Applications (i.e., within the university's Google Workspace). Because AI tools, capabilities, and security are evolving quickly, the Data Use Guidelines will continue to be updated as new technologies and practices emerge.

For questions about the Data Use Guidelines, or if there is information in university policy or on Boise State websites that appears to conflict with the guidelines, contact the Chief Information Security Officer at [email protected] so it can be reviewed and clarified.
