Earlier this month, Marinette area welding professionals, local artists, and high school students came together for some friendly competition and a celebration of an industry vital to Northeast Wisconsin.
It was all part of the third annual NWTC Welding Rodeo, held October 1 at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College Marinette campus.
"The Welding Rodeo is about showcasing talent, creating opportunity, and inspiring the next generation of welders," said Cindy Bailey, NWTC director of K12 Pathways and Rural Community Impact. "Students can see firsthand how a career in welding combines creativity, innovation, and technical skill while leading to family-sustaining careers. At the same time, experienced welders have the opportunity to demonstrate the pride they take in their craft and serve as role models for those coming behind them."
Competitors in two categories - amateur and professional - participated in welding challenges that transformed scrap metal into works of art. Later in the day, sculptures were auctioned to support scholarships for future welding students.
The event raised approximately $6,000 for scholarships to help meet the growing workforce needs of local industries, including shipbuilding. In addition, the rodeo brought in more high school participants.
"We're thrilled to have more high school teams participating this year as we continue strengthening the connection between education, industry, and the future workforce of our region," said Bailey.
John Hofer of the Provident Health Foundation served as the event's auctioneer for the third consecutive year. In that time, Hofer has helped raise over $20,000 in scholarships.
