NEW: Report on How the Health Care Industry Stacks the Deck Against Working Families

Report examines the crisis of wrongful health care claim denials and how it delays care and blindsides families with unaffordable medical bills.

WASHINGTON - Today, Ranking Member Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03), House Committee on Education and Workforce, released a new report titled "Denied: How the Health Care Industry Stacks the Deck Against Working Families."

The report examines the growing problem of wrongful health claim denials and the consequences for workers and their families. As health care costs rise, every wrongful claim denial places a greater burden on workers and their families who are already struggling to get by.

"Health insurance is, fundamentally, a promise between consumers and their health plan," said Ranking Member Scott. "When working people do their part by paying thousands of dollars every year for coverage- they expect their plan to cover the care they need. Too often, insurers break that promise by denying legitimate claims and shifting costs onto families who can least afford it."

The concerns raised in this report are especially urgent in employer-sponsored health coverage, which covers more than 181 million Americans, yet lacks sufficient transparency and oversight. The report also outlines concerns about limited transparency into denial rates and gaps in enforcement which make it difficult to hold health insurers accountable.

In conclusion, the report calls for stronger transparency, oversight, and accountability to ensure that insurance companies and health plans honor the coverage they promise and that working families can access and afford the care they need.
