How to support WSU food pantries amid SNAP uncertainty

Food pantries across the Washington State University system are preparing for a potential surge in demand due to uncertainty around the federal government's largest food aid program.

Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, is currently in flux amid the ongoing government shutdown. On Monday, the Trump administration said in a court filing it would only send partial payments this month. The administration's filing came in response to two federal judge's rulings last week that the USDA's planned pause on SNAP funding was likely unlawful.

Approximately 42 million Americans receive federal food assistance via SNAP, including members of the WSU community.

In Pullman, for example, Dining Services reported more than 500 SNAP transactions between its markets in Global Scholars Hall and Southside Café during the 2024-25 academic year. Already this semester, the two markets accepting SNAP have accounted for 144 transactions.

In response to the uncertainty around SNAP benefits, food pantries across the WSU system are stocking their shelves and ensuring students know how to access their services.

Members of the WSU community can support food pantries with either donations of food or other essential items such as toiletries. Cash donations are also greatly appreciated, as these can be used to supplement existing stocks.

Members of the WSU community can find lists of student food funds as well as support and emergency funds on the WSU Foundation's website. Below are also direct links to campus food pantry donation pages:

WSU student organizations are also lending assistance to those experiencing food insecurity. In Pullman, fraternities and sororities are participating in a food drive benefiting Pullman Child Welfare. The Interfraternity Council has committed to doubling every donation made as part of the food drive.
