City of Philadelphia wins national award for helping employees get to work

The City of Philadelphia has won a national award for helping employees get to work more easily. The City received the 2026 "A Better Tomorrow" Award from The 82 Alliance, a group that works to improve transportation in communities. This award honors cities and organizations that make it easier for people to travel, get to jobs, and move around safely. Philadelphia was recognized along with SEPTA and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) for their work to improve transportation across the region.

Helping employees get to work

City employees have many ways to get to work. Many offices are near buses, trains, and walkable streets in Center City. The City also supports other ways to travel. There is bike parking at many City buildings. When there are transit delays, some teams help set up carpools so employees can still get to work. These options help employees save money and make commuting easier.

Free transit for many employees

One of the biggest programs is SEPTA Key Advantage. This program gives most City employees free, unlimited rides on SEPTA.

Today, more than 85 percent of City employees can use this benefit. It helps employees travel across the city without worrying about the cost.

The City also offers other commuter benefits, including:

  • A program that helps lower the cost of parking
  • Discounted Indego bikeshare memberships
  • Workplaces that are close to transit and easy to walk to

These benefits give employees more choices for how they get to work.

Working together across the region

This award also shows the strong partnership between the City, SEPTA, and DVRPC. Together, they are working to improve transportation across the region. This includes better public transit, safer streets, and more ways to walk and bike. These efforts help both employees and residents move around the city more easily. The City of Philadelphia will continue to support programs that make it easier to get to work and serve our communities.
