This initiative is part of Ayllu Verde, a seven-year project (2025-2032) that promotes circular economy approaches for sustainable tourism across 12 districts in the provinces of Cusco and Urubamba, with technical and financial support from KOICA.

Guiomar Alonso Cano highlighted that the Fiestas del Cusco have shown that the Fiestas del Cusco have allowed us to demonstrate that celebrating our cultural identity and caring for the environment can go hand in hand.

Youngwoo Kim, Director of KOICA Peru, also underscored the importance of innovation and sustainability in addressing the challenges facing Cusco: "Cusco has extraordinary cultural and natural heritage, but it also faces challenges that require innovative and sustainable solutions."

Ultimately, Cusco Celebra Limpio also provides an opportunity to test new solutions in contexts of large-scale public gatherings and to learn from the experience in order to strengthen future interventions. Major celebrations can thus become spaces where institutions and citizens experiment with, adapt and consolidate new ways of protecting heritage while reducing environmental impacts.

Ultimately, Cusco Celebra Limpio leaves us with a simple but important lesson: safeguarding heritage is not only about conserving monuments or keeping traditions alive. It also means transforming the way we inhabit, celebrate and collectively care for the places that give meaning to our shared identity.

When institutions, communities, vendors, artists, recyclers, volunteers and visitors share this responsibility, cultural celebrations can become not only expressions of living heritage, but also spaces capable of transforming our relationship with the environment. This collective spirit reflects the very idea of ayllu in Quechua: a community that shares, cares for one another and builds its future together.
