Congressman Aderholt Announces $20.3 Million Federal Grant for St. Bernard Bridge Replacement Project

Cullman, AL - Congressman Robert Aderholt (AL-04) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $20,390,010 grant to the City of Cullman for the St. Bernard Bridge Replacement Project. The grant, part of the FY25-26 Rural MPDG Program, will facilitate the replacement and relocation of the existing two-lane St. Bernard Bridge on US Hwy 278/SR 69, which crosses Eight Mile Creek.

In addition to the grant, Congressman Aderholt has secured $11 million in the House passed FY2025 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies appropriations bill to further support replacement costs and ensure the project's timely completion.

"I was proud to write a letter of support for the City of Cullman in securing this vital infrastructure investment," said Congressman Aderholt. "Replacing and widening the St. Bernard Bridge is crucial for enhancing transportation safety and efficiency in our region. This project will not only improve traffic flow along US Hwy 278 but will also support economic growth and ensure our infrastructure can meet future demands."

The project will widen US Hwy 278 from 4th Avenue to just beyond St. Bernard Drive, aligning the adjoining roadway and approaches with the new bridge. This enhancement will alleviate congestion and improve overall roadway connectivity for Cullman residents and businesses.

"I will continue to work to secure the necessary resources for our district's infrastructure needs, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact this project will have on Cullman and the surrounding communities," Aderholt added.

The grant will be disbursed by the Office of the Secretary of Transportation.
