Mayor Gloria-Sponsored Housing Bills Head to Governor Newsom’s Desk

SAN DIEGO - Mayor Gloria issued the following statement after the California Legislature approved SB 958 and SB 344, two bills authored by Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, M.D., that provide greater certainty under California's environmental laws while preserving meaningful environmental protections and helping move the long-awaited transformation of San Diego's Midway District forward:
"San Diegans have waited decades to see the Midway District transformed. Today, we are one step closer to turning that long-awaited vision into reality.
"SB 958 and SB 344, authored by Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, M.D., provide greater certainty under California's environmental laws while preserving meaningful environmental protections and public review. Together, these bills will help prevent unnecessary litigation and years of delay from standing in the way of housing and infill development that has already undergone an extensive public planning process.
"For the Midway District, this means we can focus on delivering what San Diegans have been waiting for: 4,250 new homes, including 2,000 deed-restricted affordable homes, new parks, critical infrastructure and a new entertainment center.
"I want to thank Senator Weber Pierson, M.D., our San Diego legislative delegation and our partners in organized labor for their leadership and persistence in getting these important bills across the finish line.
"I urge Governor Newsom to sign SB 958 and SB 344 into law so we can turn years of planning into real progress-and get to work building the homes, infrastructure and vibrant community San Diegans deserve."
