University School for Young Children at SEMO Reaccredited by NAEYC for High-Quality Early Learning

The University School for Young Children (USYC) at Southeast Missouri State University has earned reaccreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), a nationally recognized mark of excellence for early childhood education programs.

NAEYC accreditation is a rigorous, multi-year process that evaluates early learning programs against national standards for high-quality education and care for young children. Programs must demonstrate compliance with comprehensive criteria covering areas such as curriculum, health and safety, family engagement, staff qualifications and program leadership.

For USYC, the reaccreditation represents the successful completion of a detailed review process that takes place every five years, with preparation beginning years in advance. Each classroom compiles extensive documentation portfolios that include photographs, written assessments and evidence showing how standards are met in daily practice. Program leadership must also demonstrate how quality standards are consistently upheld across the entire school.

The process includes ongoing evaluation and the possibility of site visits from NAEYC representatives at any time, underscoring the organization's emphasis on continuous quality improvement and accountability.

"This is not a one-time achievement. It reflects years of intentional work across every classroom and every educator here," said Kim Rueseler, interim director of the USYC. "From documentation to daily practice, our team is constantly reflecting on how we meet and exceed national standards for young children and their families."

NAEYC accreditation is widely regarded as a benchmark of high-quality early childhood education, signaling that a program meets research-based standards that often exceed state licensing requirements.

The University School for Young Children has been continuously accredited by NAEYC since 2006, maintaining its status as a nationally recognized early learning program. The school is the only NAEYC-accredited early childhood program between St. Louis and Nashville and the only one in southeast Missouri.

USYC serves as a training and learning environment for both children and future educators, offering hands-on experiences for SEMO students while providing families access to a high-quality early childhood program.

Reaccreditation reflects the school's ongoing commitment to continuous improvement and its role in supporting early childhood development in the region.

The University School for Young Children continues to serve as a model for early learning excellence while preparing future educators through immersive, experience-based learning opportunities. Learn more at semo.edu/usyc.
