Responding to the UK budget today, Beth Thompson, Executive Director of Policy & Partnershipsat Wellcome, the UK's largest non-governmental funder of research, said:
"While recognising there were no easy choices in today's budget, cuts to capital spending present an uncertain future for the R&D sector.
"The UK is home to remarkable scientific research. R&D is one of the country's proven engines of growth, innovation and security. It can only flourish when backed by long-term and ambitious investment.
"As we now look to next year's spending review, it's essential that the government grows investment in research and innovation to fuel discoveries and initiatives that can have a real impact on the UK's health and economic prosperity."
