IHSA Distinguished Media Service Award Presentation: Rick Armstrong
Rick Armstrong has told the stories of high school student-athletes and teams in Illinois as a sportswriter for nearly 50 years.
Rick has worked for the Aurora Beacon-News since 1999 and had previous stints at the Hoopeston Chronicle-Herald, DeKalb Daily Chronicle, and Joliet Herald-News.
Rick was honored with the IHSA Distinguished Media Service Award on January 9, 2026, at West Aurora High School as a part of its rivalry basketball games with East Aurora.
Prior to the varsity boys contest, Armstrong was recognized in front of the crowd, received his award from IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson and WAHS Athletic Director Jason Buckley, and then shared some reflections on his career.
